Jaipur, 30 November: While on the one hand there is hullabaloo about the global economic meltdown, on the other hand there is not a single vacant stall in the Jaipur Jewellery Show (JJS). Merely six years ago, the show had begun with only 67 stalls. On the other hand, this year, as many as 375 stalls have already been allotted -- with the number of traders clamouring for booths. The organizers are unable to help.

According to the Convener of the JJS, Mr. Vimal Chand Surna, Jaipur's jewellery is world renowned. Along with exports, a large chunk of the sale of jewellery is to the local customers. During the wedding season the demand for jewellery spirals within the country. As such, there is little impact of the slowdown on Jaipur's jewellery market. The Convener said that the show was an ideal medium for exhibitors for taking the products to the customer. Any visitor who comes to the show either comes to buy or plans to buy jewellery in the near future. Which is why exhibitors always showcase their best products during the exposition.

The JJS's Secretary, Mr. Rajiv Jain, informed that Jaipur once had recognition in the world as the Gem City. However, now it has been transformed to Jewellery City. The jewellers, for sustaining themselves in the market, are going in for new, innovative designs. In the JJS the exhibitors will launch their new designs so that they can avail of the benefit of large number of buyers seeing them.

According to the Joint Secretary and Media Coordinator, Mr. Ajay Kala, the coming
years will witness the Indian jewellery market being consumer-driven since trendy
jewellery, suiting every pocket, was being made available to them. Kala informed
that a significant reason for jewellery in the local market not being impacted by
the downside was that it was being seen as a safe investment. The concerted fact
remains that the traditional form of jewellery provides security.
